A history of sacred places, the places the Lord chose for His name. Some were primitive, like the stone altars of the patriarchs. Some were temporary, like the Tabernacle carried through the wilderness. Some were built to last, like Solomon's Temple, the Second Temple raised from exile, and Herod's great house where Jesus taught. Told from the Bible, the Book of Mormon, Josephus and the Mishnah, it shows what each one meant to the people who worshiped there, and why the house of the Lord has always stood at the center of worship.

About this book
In AD 70 Rome burned the house, and the altar fell silent. From its ashes two paths took their lasting shape. The sages turned Judaism toward prayer, study and the synagogue. The followers of Jesus, who already preached the Lamb offered "once for all," were set on a road of their own.
Each chapter opens with a synopsis and a guide to what to read alongside in the Bible. Highlights include Melchizedek, the priests of the Nephites, "Inside the House of the Lord," the Sanhedrin, Yavneh and the Mishnah, and "The Final Sacrifice."
An imagined priestly family, followed across the centuries, shows what life under the law was like. Their story is labeled as fiction.
From the back cover
“Unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose … even unto his habitation shall ye seek.”Deuteronomy 12:5
From Adam's altar to the burning of Herod's Temple, the house of the Lord stands at the heart of the scriptures. This book follows it through the centuries: the altars of the patriarchs, the Tabernacle, Solomon's Temple, the Second Temple raised from exile, and Herod's great house where Jesus taught.
In AD 70 Rome burned that house, and the altar fell silent. From its ashes two paths took their lasting shape. The sages turned Judaism toward prayer, study and the synagogue. The followers of Jesus, who already preached the Lamb offered “once for all,” were set on a road of their own, and the young church carried its witness along Rome's roads to the ends of the empire.
Drawing on the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price, and on Josephus, the Mishnah and Latter-day Saint scholarship, this is the story of the place the Lord chose, and of temples restored in the latter days.
