Countless millions died without ever hearing the name of Jesus Christ. Others heard it and turned away, or never sought Him with all their heart. Is the grave the end of God's mercy? This book follows the Lord's answer: from the Sheol of the Old Testament, to His visit to the spirits in prison, the keys Elijah restored and the vision of 1918. And it places the work squarely in our hands, in these latter days: "they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect" (D&C 128:15).

Through it runs the story of one imagined family across twenty-six centuries. Asher, a Levite singer, watches from the world of spirits as his brother Zerah, who chose the idol altars, waits in prison. The line runs on to a mill hand in Preston in 1837, to his daughter wading into the Mississippi to be baptized for him, and to a father in Arizona today, fighting the same anger his forefathers knew, who finds healing through family history and the temple.

From the back cover

What of the countless millions who died never knowing the word of God, and those who heard it and turned away? Is the grave the end of God's mercy?

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins, without a knowledge of the truth, or in transgression, having rejected the prophets.”Doctrine and Covenants 138:32

For nearly seven hundred years a Levite singer, killed on the temple steps in the days of King Manasseh, stood at the edge of paradise and sang across the gulf toward the brother who chose the idol altars. Then the Son of God came among the dead, organized His forces, and sent His messengers into the prison.

Drawing on the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price, with ancient writings and Jewish tradition set apart and labeled, this book follows the mission to the dead from Sheol to the vision of 1918: the many rooms of the prison, the long silence of the apostasy, Elijah's keys, and the ordinances that can only be done on earth, in the flesh, by those who love the dead.

Woven through every chapter is the story of one family across twenty-six centuries, and of a grandson today whose choices still matter to the fathers who went before him.
